Want a more interactive class? Try blended learning!

As an English teacher, have you ever feeled that the engagement of students in your class is not satisfactory. If the ansewr is "yes", then what you need is: blended learning!

What is blended learning?

Blended learning refers to subjects that "utilise some significant online activities in otherwise face-to-face learning, but less than 45 per cent" (Smith and Kurthen 2007, in Gruba and Hinkelman 2012:4). Blended learning can be realized by special tools, such as Blendspace, LessonPaths and H5P.

Today, I will elaborate the usage of  Blendspace to you in detail.

Possible activities

  • Students use Blendspace to do presentations. Other students can give peer feedback by comment and they can have a real-time discussion.
  • Use Blendspace to make a preview of lesson for students. Send it to students and ask them to leave comments there. Then you will know what content you should focus on in the formal teaching.
  • Give teaching material to students in the form of Blendspace after class. Students can review the lesson and comment their confusion in class.

Advantages and Disadvantages

Advantages
💗 A easy way for teacher to collect resource and prepare teaching material
💗 Convenient for teachers to reserve their own TES resources
💗 Teachers can see students' comments and check their understanding at any time
💗 All students can "speak" in class at any time, increasing their engagement .
💗 Sharing the link can help students review the lesson.

Disadvantages
💢 Teachers can not speak in this kind of blended teaching. Also, students' oral skills can not be improved.
💢 It may lead to the problem of overusing computers or tablets for students.
